The first thing I ever heard of Suli Breaks was the poem ‘Why I hate school but love education’. You can check it out by clicking the link, but even without listening to it, the title of this poem should give you food for thought.
Most people think school and education go hand in hand, but in the words of Suli Breaks; ‘If there was a family tree, hard work and education would be related. But school would probably be a distant cousin.’
He goes on explaining that school is about giving people information about certain subjects but it’s not teaching them to think while ‘Education is about inspiring ones mind not just filling their head.’
His next poem hitches in on the same subject. How school is societies way of getting educated, while most people only remember the things they have learned before the exam and forget it straight after. ‘We all have different abilities, thought processes, experiences and genes. So why is a class full of individuals tested by the same means.’
He points out how it’s useless to teach people things they know they will never use nor think about ever again. How wrong it is to give people the feeling they are worth nothing more than the grade they got on their assignments. ‘Test us with tests, but the finals are never final. Because they never prepare us for the biggest test which is survival.’
To me, Suli Breaks is an inspiration, educating people all over the world. His message is simple; You can do anything and be anything you want to, as long as you work hard for it and keep believing in your dreams.
You don’t need a piece of paper to tell you what you’re worth.
‘So this one is for my generation.
The ones that found what they were looking for on Google.
The ones that followed their dreams on Twitter,
pictured their future on Instagram,
accepted destiny on Facebook.
This one’s for my failures and my drop outs.
My unemployed graduates.
My shop assistants, cleaners and cashiers with bigger dreams.
My self-employed entrepreneurs.
My world changers and my dream chasers.’
‘We will not let an exam result decide our fate.’
Even Will Smith is helping Suli’s message get spread!
I love the person Will appears to be (I have never met him) and this only increases my love for him.
Real recognize real, that has always been the deal!
